What to learn next

You know enough now to learn the rest by yourself. Here's where to go.

Set up Python at home

So far, Python has been running in your browser. Install it from python.org, along with a free code editor, such as VS Code. Then save your adventure as adventure.py, and run it for real.

Build something of your own

This is the best practice there is. Pick something small, and make it work.
  • A quiz about a topic you love
  • A tracker for your spending or your sleep
  • A bigger adventure, with more rooms
  • A tool that tidies up a folder of files

Topics we left out on purpose

A beginner doesn't need these, but you're ready for them now, one at a time.
  • List comprehensions and recursion
  • Decorators and generators
  • Type hints
  • Threads and async code

Choose a direction

Python is used for almost everything, so follow what interests you.
  • Websites: Flask or Django
  • Data: pandas and matplotlib
  • Games: pygame
  • Automating dull jobs: the os and shutil modules

Learn to learn alone

Professionals look things up all day. Read the official Python documentation. Search for the exact error message. Read other people's code. Keep using what you learned in Detective Desk: look, don't guess.
